Who We Are
St. Joseph is an acute care, regional medical center with 263 beds. Originally called St. Joseph German Hospital, it was founded in 1864 by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. The organization moved to current location in Towson, Maryland in 1965. St. Joseph is a member of Catholic Health Initiatives, a national nonprofit health organization with headquarters in Denver, CO. CHI is a faith-based system operating in 18 states includes 72 hospitals; 40 long-term care, assisted- and residential-living facilities; and two community health-services organizations.

- Offers Hospitalist 24-hour physician coverage in critical care and general medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics and surgery.
- Has an on call 24/7 Rapid Response Team, composed of a critical care physician, intensive care nurse and respiratory therapist, to prevent codes and reduce mortality when a patient's condition deteriorates. Has more than 1,100 physicians on the medical staff, representing more than 50 medical specialties. Employs approximately 2,300 nurses, allied healthcare professionals and staff.

Units & Dedicated Suites
- Inpatient units include five Medical/Surgical Units, a Mother/Baby Unit, a GYN/antepartum Unit, Pediatric Unit, 28-bed Critical Care Unit, and 10-bed Open Heart Surgery Unit and 19-bed Psychiatric Unit.
- The Sleep Disorders Center has five private rooms, adult and pediatric sleep testing and state-of-the-art equipment, offers the comfort of a hotel with the safety of a hospital.

- Digestive Disorders Center has four suits offering endoscopies, colonoscopies, EGD, EUS, ERCP, motility studies and the Spyglass visualization system.
Institutes & Centers of Excellence

- The Heart Institute
The Heart Institute is a state-of-the-art, centralized service that provides a complete continuum of cardiac care including open-heart surgery, a cardiac surgery unit, an all-digital Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Cardiographics featuring ICAEL accredited echo laboratory, Electrophysiology Lab, Nuclear Medicine, 20-bed cardiac unit, hospital-wide monitoring capabilities and a Cardiovascular Fitness program. The STEMI LifeNet system in Baltimore County ambulances transmits cardiac information directly to St. Joseph's ER so that emergency staff and cardiologists are ready for emergency cardiac patients prior to their arrival.
St. Joseph offers HeartAware, a free, seven-minute risk assessment and a low-cost CT scan and calcium scoring that can detect calcium buildup on the heart's artery walls.
- The Cancer Institute
The Cancer Institute is the only NCI Community Cancer Center Program in Maryland. It features a patient-centered, multidisciplinary approach to cancer care under one roof with a large, sunny infusion center, Radiation Oncology and new Women's Center, composed of the Breast Center (accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Cancer) and Gynecologic Oncology. A full range of clinical trials and psychosocial support services are available. St. Joseph is accredited with commendation as a comprehensive community cancer center by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The Institute includes Urologic Oncology (a leader in da Vinci prostatectomies), Thoracic Oncology, Colorectal Oncology (including Ostomy care) and Orthopaedic Oncology. NCI awarded The Cancer Institute $2.9 million in stimulus funds to expand clinical trials and cancer navigators.
- The Orthopaedic Institute
The Orthopaedic Institute has been named one of the nation's top orthopaedic facilities by U.S. News & World Report and designated a Blue Distinction Center for Hip and Knee and Spine surgery by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. It specializes in pain management and rapid rehab following joint replacement. The Institute includes the Scoliosis and Spine Center and a Spine Research Lab, and offers sports medicine, joint replacement, spine surgery, complex disc replacement surgery, upper extremity and foot and ankle surgery. A dedicated state-of-the-art 50-bed Orthopaedic Unit includes 32 private rooms and a rehabilitation facility. Orthopaedic oncology is offered in concert with the Cancer Institute.
- Women's Services
The Family Childbirth Center provides comprehensive, family-oriented care. Includes nine Labor, Delivery and Recovery suites with a dedicated obstetric anesthesiologist available at all times; Mother/Baby Suite of 20 private postpartum rooms with a hotel-like atmosphere; full-term nursery and Level III+ Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Services include certified nurse midwives, lactation consultants, a Warm-Line to support breastfeeding and a wide range of family education classes. The Perinatal Center offers high-risk obstetrical services for patients with diabetes or kidney disease, multiple pregnancies and advanced maternal age; obstetric ultrasound in an AIUM-accredited practice; genetic counseling; prenatal diagnosis and testing for fetal well-being for pregnancies with complications.
- Emergency Department
The Emergency Department is staffed by specially trained physicians and nurses, providing emergency treatment for more than 45,000 patients per year. St. Joseph's ER was named the 2009 Top Winner, Innovator of the Year Award by The Daily Record for increasing efficiency and reducing treatment and waiting time by 25 percent. In May 2010, St. Joseph became the first area hospital to offer the public ER current wait times via www.ShorterERWait.com. The wait time represents the time from when the patient arrives and signs in to when he or she is evaluated by a healthcare professional, and care begins.
"Pediatrics After Hours" is an extension of the ER, staffed by pediatricians and pediatric nurse who offer expert care to children when their own pediatricians are not available, noon to 12 midnight, seven days a week. Parents call ahead for an appointment.
The Stroke Center has been awarded a Certificate of Distinction as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, as well as designation as a Primary Stroke Center by MIEMSS. St. Joseph has emergency physicians, intensivists and critical care staff certified in performing the NIH stroke scale, which evaluates stroke severity and assists in determining tPA (a clot-busting drug) treatment.
- Surgical Services
Surgical Services performs approximately 13,500 surgeries annually. Twenty-two state-of-the-art operating rooms with Surgical Prep and Recovery, Family Waiting Area, Family Liaison and Patient Tracking Technology to keep families updated. Approximately 300 surgeons provide a wide range of specialties including orthopaedic, thoracic, cardiac, vascular, and neurosurgery. St. Joseph surgical staff perform Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery and have done more da Vinci robotic surgeries than any other community hospital in the state, using it for prostatectomy, bariatric and GYN surgeries. St. Joseph was the first community hospital in Maryland to incorporate the World Health Organization Surgical Checklist.
- Psychiatric Services
Psychiatric Services offers three tiers of care including a 19-bed, short-term inpatient unit, a partial hospitalization program and an urgent assessment service. Staff psychiatrists, social workers, occupational therapists and nurses treat disorders such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Psychiatrist consultants provide emergency psychiatric evaluations in the Emergency Department.
- Diabetes Management
The Diabetes Management Center provides both inpatient and outpatient services, including a Diabetes Self-Management Program certified by the American Diabetes Association, a monthly support group, gestational diabetes services, nutrition counseling and community outreach.
- The Wound Ostomy Center
The Wound Ostomy Center provides both inpatient and outpatient care for non-healing chronic wounds, as well as comprehensive teaching and care for patients with colostomies, ileostomies and urinary diversions.
Diagnostic and Treatment Services

A full range of services includes clinical and anatomic pathology labs, Blood Bank, four Patient Service Center Labs on campus and one off-campus for convenience, Cardiographics, Radiology, Interventional Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Electroencephalography, Ultrasound, Pulmonary Function Laboratory, and Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy and Lymphedema Management.

Education & Outreach
St. Joseph Community Health Department is committed to enhancing individuals' quality of life at all stages through classes, programs, and services. A broad variety of health-related topics are offered to the community. By partnering with local groups, the department can also provide classes, services and programs that help make Baltimore County a healthier place for all.
St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation
A subsidiary of St. Joseph Medical Center and a member of Catholic Health Initiatives, the Foundation was founded by the Sisters of Saint Francis of Philadelphia and St. Joseph Medical Center Board of Directors. Through the efforts of its board members and staff, the Foundation seeks the philanthropic support of the community served by St. Joseph Medical Center. To ensure and support continued services of the medical center, fundraising is accomplished through planned gifts, major gifts, direct mail, special events, grants and major campaigns.
Spiritual Care Department
Spiritual care for all St. Joseph patients, families and staff focuses on the spiritual aspects of wellness, illness, recovery, medical care, ethical decisions, dying and death. All religious traditions are held sacred. An ecumenical staff of chaplains visit patients on a regular basis. The Cardinal William H. Keeler Spiritual Care Center includes a Chapel, Meditation Garden and Interfaith Prayer Room.
