TOWSON, Md. – Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) accepted the recommendation of the St. Joseph Medical Center (SJMC) board of directors at its meeting today to transfer SJMC to the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) from CHI, its current sponsor. The decision comes after a year-long evaluation of strategic alternatives and discussions in recent months with Catholic and other not-for-profit health care organizations that expressed interest in SJMC.

St. Joseph Cancer Institute Creates Yoga Program for Breast Cancer Survivors
Customized to improve symptoms, movement, fatigue and lymphedema
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, the Cancer Institute at St. Joseph Medical Center launched a pilot yoga program for breast cancer survivors that will continue this winter and spring. Class is open to any breast cancer survivor.

St. Joseph Medical Center’s Maternity Services Rated the Highest in Maryland by Patient Experience

St. Joseph Medical Center has been rated the highest of any Maryland hospital for maternity patient satisfaction according to the Maryland Hospital Performance Evaluation Guide on Maryland Health Care Commission web site.
St. Joseph Medical Center received a rating of 9 or 10 (the highest) from 82 percent of its maternity patients. The next highest rating was for a hospital in Montgomery County, Maryland with 80 percent.
In response to the question as to whether patients would recommend their hospital, St. Joseph tied for first place with 86 percent of patients saying yes.

Breast Cancer Patients Can Prevent or Reduce Lymphedema (Arm Swelling) With Early Detection and Massage/Exercise Treatment by Physical Therapists
Lymphedema can be a chronic, debilitating and, often, irreversible side effect of breast cancer treatment. “Physical therapists can restore patients’ motion and mobility, reduce swelling, and even prevent the onset of lymphedema when intervention is early following a mastectomy or radiation treatment,” emphasizes Dr. Michael Schultz, medical director of the Breast Center at St. Joseph Medical Center. “This can make a huge difference in a patient’s quality of life.”

St. Joseph's Cancer Institute Awarded $100,000 Matching Grant by the American Cancer Society for "One Voice" African-American & Latina Breast Cancer Outreach
Project to reduce screening barriers for underserved women in Baltimore County and Baltimore City
(Towson, MD) The Cancer Institute at St. Joseph Medical Center has been awarded a $50,000 matching grant from the American Cancer Society (ACS) South Atlantic Division to support a focused, culturally-sensitive breast outreach program called "One Voice." St. Joseph Medical Center will provide the matching funds, bringing the total amount for this 18-month project to $100,000. Advanced Radiology will contribute 100 (of the 135) free screening mammograms for the project.

Saint Agnes Hospital is proud to announce the recent expansion of The Hodes Liver and Pancreas Center to its campus. The Center will be led by Dr. Mark Fraiman, a hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeon, who is one of the few doctors in the area performing highly complex procedures for the treatment of liver and pancreas diseases and is regionally recognized as an expert in the Whipple surgery – a highly complex procedure which removes the head and neck of the pancreas. Dr. Richard Mackey, who specializes in laparoscopic liver and pancreas surgery, will serve as the medical director of the Center at St. Joseph Medical Center and the assistant director of the Center at Saint Agnes.
