Sleep Disorders Center
Many sleep disorders do more than deprive people of a good night's rest. They also contribute to serious health problems and an increase in many types of accidents. Due to the growing need to treat sleep disorders, St. Joseph’s offers a comprehensive sleep diagnostic program.
Our facility features a comfortable, hotel-like atmosphere with cable TV and a shower, as well as morning refreshments. Most important, we offer the full medical back-up that only a hospital can provide.
Our experienced staff of technologists works with Board Certified Sleep Specialists to help diagnose sleep disorders, such as:
- Sleep apnea - a breathing disorder
- Narcolepsy- excessive sleepiness
- Insomnia - the inability to sleep
- Periodic limb movements of sleep
- Night terrors
- Teeth grinding
Children’s Sleep Studies
Our pediatric sleep specialist addresses the sleep problems of our younger patients. One parent is welcome to stay overnight. Children are encouraged to bring a special blanket, pillow or stuffed animal.
What is a Sleep Study?
A sleep study or polysomnogram (PSG), is a non-invasive, painless test that records and measures various functions during sleep. Small electrodes are placed on numerous areas of the body to monitor:
- Nasal/oral breathing
- Abdominal and thoracic effort
- Snoring
- Heart rate and blood oxygen
- Brain waves
- Muscle movements
This information is recorded onto a computer (usually at night) and analyzed the next day. We then send the test results (interpretation and recommendations) to the patient's referring physician within three to five business days.
Our Center also offers:
- Diagnostic PSG (polysomnogram)
- CPAP/Bi-PAP titration studies
- Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLT)
- Maintenance Wakefulness Tests (MWT)
- Patient follow-up
- Support groups
- Comprehensive consultations by board certified sleep specialists.
