Preparing for Your Operation

Having a successful operation requires thorough planning and your careful participation in several steps of presurgical preparation.

Programs and Services - Surgical Services - Preparing for Your OperationPreregistration by telephone can be done by calling the Patient Access Department at 410.337.1626. The Patient Access staff is available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday.

Preregistration online can be completed by clicking here. Preregistering for your operation online is convenient and you can do it anytime. Your information will be kept confidential and secure. The information you submit will be transmitted via secure 128-bit encryption.

Please preregister at least two days prior to your scheduled visit. This allows the staff adequate time to verify and precertify your insurance (if applicable). If you are unable to meet this timeframe, preregistration can be completed over the telephone the day prior to your outpatient service(s) by calling the Patient Access department, 410.337.1626.

Please be prepared to provide the following:

  • Date of test or procedure
  • Name, address, phone number
  • Insurance information (on card)
  • Complete physician name(s)
  • Precertification number from insurance company, if applicable

The week before your procedure you will receive an automated telephone call from the Clinical Assessment Center prompting you to call for a healthcare assessment with a nurse. Please be prepared to review your current medications and your medical and surgical health history. The healthcare assessment center is open Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.

The skin prep, “Hibiclens” is the soap of choice prior to surgery. It is necessary to have the 4 ounce bottle, ensuring the main active ingredient is “Chlorhexidine Gluconate.” Please follow the steps provided to ensure your skin is properly cleansed. If these directions differ from what your surgeon has provided, please follow any surgeon specific instructions pre-operatively.

Skin must be prepped on the night before surgery at your home. Skin must be prepped again at home on the morning of surgery. Use half of the bottle each time you shower. In the shower, wet skin and with a freshly clean wash cloth, apply cleansing solution liberally. Cover the entire body from the neck down. The solution will not lather like traditional soap.

Do not use if you are allergic to chlorhexidine gluconate or any other ingredients in the preparation. If so, shower with antibacterial soap in the same manner. Do not allow this product to come in contact with your eyes, ears, mouth, internal genital area, or open wounds. Do not apply any soaps, lotions, powder, deodorant, perfumes, moisturizers or makeup after prepping. Chlorhexidine gluconate is absorbed by cotton washcloths and may cause discoloration.

Once the entire body has been cleansed, be sure to scrub surgical site(s) thoroughly for at least an additional two minutes. Wipe each area in a back-and-forth motion to adequately clean. Rinse thoroughly. The skin may feel “sticky” for several minutes after the antiseptic solution has been used. This is normal.

Do not shave any body parts from the neck down (ex. legs, under arms, genital area). Wear freshly laundered sleepwear and sleep on freshly laundered sheets. Wear freshly laundered clothes to the hospital.

Do not consume any food or beverages after midnight the night before your operation (this includes gum and mints).

Remove nail polish, makeup and jewelry, including piercings.

Avoid smoking and alcoholic beverages for 24 hours prior to your procedure.

Take your usual medications unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
